Paul Rand was an art director and graphic designer. He was best known for creating corporate logo designs. He strongly believed in simplicity when creating his concepts. Rand is regarded as one of the most influential graphic designers of the twentieth century.
A notable aspect of Paul Rand's graphic design carreer was the creation of several corporate logos. Rand focused on the communication and the function of logo design especially when executing the IBM logo. Rand expressed his concern that the weight of the letters would vary undeliberately seeing that the "I" would take up far less space than the "M." Rand experiemented with the stripes within the logo for over ten years. The use of striped were to establish a strong sense of unity and create the illusion of movement.

In 1961, the UPS logo was redesigned by Paul Rand. He was chosen because of his notoriety he gained while creating other coporate logos. Rand was hired to help UPS establish more unity accross all their branding platforms. Essentially, he tried to simplify the logo to consisting of a sheild, a package, and the "UPS" text. Rand created the third iteration of the UPS logo redesign, which was changed later in 2003 because the company grew beyond managing just delivery and shipping.

This is a cover design Paul Rand did for Jazzways magazine. Its making use of a modern abstract style. Rand has a simplistic 2D composition. However, the shadows are able to convey to the viewer that there's depth. The black and white striped elements can be interpreted as abstracted piano forms.
