The first step to solving a rubik's cube is the make a cross on whichever side you desire. I prefer yellow but many speed cubers are color neutral or prefer white or yellow. So for instance if you start on the yellow side, you would need to get the yellow blue, yellow red, yellow green and yellow orange edge pieces on the yellow side also corresponding to each respective center. The most basic way is to align the secondary color (blue, red, green & orange) of the edge piece with its respective center and rotate it position so that the yellow edge also aligns with its center.
